Offshore/Subsea Engineering

The programme consists of two specializations: Offshore Engineering (Fixed and Floating) Structures, and Subsea Engineering (flowlines and risers). Offshore & Subsea Engineering is a multidisciplinary specialization that involves:

  • Structures such as fixed and floating platforms for the oil and gas industry.
  • Subsea pipelines and other underwater equipment for this sector.
  • Facilities for running and maintenance of offshore installations.
This specialisation is relatively young but has expanded globally in the last five decades with the shift in Oil/Gas exploration from onshore to offshore. Experts in this field often encounter problems which have never been addressed by an extant body of knowledge and skills. This implies that the offshore/subsea engineer must be adequately prepared intellectually and technically to solve the mostly unique problems encountered in this field.

Entry Requirements

Graduates from NUC and COREN Accredited University programmes (in Nigeria) or highly recognized/rated foreign University who also satisfy the following conditions are eligible to apply for admission:

  • A Bachelor degree with a First Class or Second Class Upper Division with a CGPA of not lower than 3.5 on a 5-point Scale/System.
  • The degree must be in any of the following engineering disciplines:
    • Marine Engineering
    • Naval Architecture
    • Offshore/Subsea Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Agricultural Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Petroleum Engineering
  • School certificate/GCE/SSCE ‘O’ level with credit in five subjects not more than two sittings that must include the following.
    • English Language
    • Mathematics
    • Chemistry
    • Physics
  • The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) Discharge Certificate (For Nigerians).

Course Overview

The master's degree is a 36-unit program. Students will complete 9 units of core courses and 15 units of electives and a 12-unit research project. At least 21 units of study must be taken from courses taught by the University of Adelaide. Link to course overview

Programme Structure

The programmes are designed to cover a period of eighteen (18) months that includes six (6) months of internship geared towards executing a practical research project in an offshore oil and Gas Exploration and Production Company. Each programme consists of fourteen (14) general courses (which are common to all three programmes/options) and a set of seven (7) specialized courses. Courses are divided into modules with each course consisting of one (1) module or more. Course modules will be taken one at a time and each module consisting of lectures, tutorials and/or laboratory exercises shall be delivered over 40 hours, mostly (Monday to Friday). Continuous Assessment Tests shall be delivered at the completion of each module.


The goal of the programme is to provide a postgraduate/Master’s degree level training that will enable graduates effectively perform high level marine and offshore engineering functions and related/associated tasks as well as in other allied engineering disciplines. The training is tailored towards developing the intellectual capacity as well the essential skills required of an engineer to carry out general and specific specialists’ functions in the following areas of activity: The general functions include;

  1. Planning, Design, Construction/Installation, and Operation and Maintenance of various types of Marine Crafts, Offshore and Subsea Structures and Systems.
  2. Application of Scientific and Engineering/Technical knowledge and skills to provide practical solutions for safe and cost effective means of responsibly exploiting ocean resources.
  3. Inventing/Creating/Devising means of overcoming natural and man-made challenges in the maritime space/environment.
  4. Use of Scientific methods/techniques for the optimal management of resources

Specific tasks include;

  1. Work in technical teams to carry out techno-economic analysis of new projects as well as upgrading/expansion and revamping of existing facilities
  2. Carry out high level engineering tasks in specialized marine systems design projects
  3. Participate as technical specialist in execution of marine and offshore equipment and facilities construction/installation.
  4. Carry out various levels of technical and management functions in the operation and maintenance of marine and offshore equipment and facilities.
  5. Plan and participate in training and other skills development activities
  6. Liaise with quality and safety assurance, s well as statutory agencies in
  7. Perform collaborative functions between different fields of specialization within an organization and also with external bodies.

The Marine Engineering MSc has been accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) as meeting the further learning requirements, in full, for registration as a Chartered Engineer for a period of five years, from the 2017 student cohort intake onwards. There is currently a global shortage of well-qualified marine engineers and therefore the job prospects in this industry are good.

Accreditation and Afflicts

TThe Marine Engineering MSc has been accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) as meeting the further learning requirements, in full, for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.
